Judge M. Sue Kurita was licensed to practice law in Texas in May 1986 after graduating from Texas Tech University School of Law. Judge Kurita has served as the judge of El Paso County Court at Law #6 since 1998, after previously working as an attorney and a municipal judge. Judge Kurita is a Commissioner on the Judicial Commission on Mental Health and serves on the State Bar of Texas Litigation Council. She served on the Supreme Court of Texas Grievance Oversight Committee from 2014 to 2020, including as chair in 2019-2020. Her work with the State Bar of Texas includes service as a member on the Litigation Council, a member and chair of the District 17 Grievance Committee, a member of the Local Bar Services Committee, a member of the Judicial Section Board of Directors, vice chair of the Administration of Rules of Evidence Committee, and a member of the Disability Rights & Issues Committee. Judge Kurita has served the legal profession in numerous other capacities, including in leadership roles with the El Paso Bar Association, State Commission on Judicial Conduct, Texas Center for the Judiciary, National Association of Women Judges, and American Law Institute. Among her many accolades, Judge Kurita was named a Woman Trailblazer by the El Paso Bar Association and the 2015 Outstanding Jurist by the American Board of Trial Advocates, and in April 2022, the State Bar of Texas honored Judge M. Sue Kurita with a resolution for “her outstanding service to the State Bar of Texas, her untiring efforts to maintain the highest standards of conduct for Texas lawyers and judges, and her steadfast commitment to the legal profession as a whole.”
Judge Kurita has dedicated over 24 years teaching college and graduate courses for Park University, Excelsior University and the University of Texas at El Paso.
